BRIEF HISTORY OF BRIDGNORTH TOWN RESERVES FC (Mark McIntyre)

Bridgnorth Town FC first introduced a reserves side to compliment their first team as far back as the early 1950’s when they use to compete in the local Bridgnorth League.

Following this they had spells in the
Kidderminster League
and in the 1960's and 1970's, the local Wellington League and Shropshire County League.  Following the success of its senior side it was decided to field a reserve side in the Midland Combination third division and their application was accepted in 1980.

The team struggled at first, but soon adapted and the third division championship was secured in their third playing season (1982/1983). By this time, the first team who were now playing in the Southern League midland division would regularly field first team players on a regular basis. The following two seasons, saw the reserves claim a top four finish with season 1985/86, whereas their last season in division one ended with a poor end of season run and they finished 16th  out of 21 clubs.

The club then opted to play in the reserve division of the Midland Combination for a number of years before retiring the team in 1996. However the decision was made to resurrect the side and they became members of the West Midlands Regional League in 2001. The club has twice finished league runners-ups in 2003/04 and again in 2007/08. In 2008/09 Steve Crann in his second and final season as manager led the team to 3rd position behind runners up Bilbrook (sadly now defunct) and champions Wellington Amateurs.

Last season 2009/10 under Rick Doody and his assistant & former player Dean Yates, the second team finished mid table. Rick resigned because of work commitments following the away game at
Dudley United and Dean moved up to enjoy a brief spell as Reserve team manager.
Prior to the start of the new season 2010/11, former first team manager Kevin Hestletine was appointed reserve team manager; it was his second spell at this level. However with just two wins from the opening ten games, Kevin resigned.

The committee quickly appointed former
Kidderminster Harriers youth coach and former Town reserve player Nigel Griffiths who took charge following the defeat at Hanwood United.

With Telford Combination league side HQ Sports & Social deciding to affiliate under the Bridgnorth Town banner as BRIDGNORTH DEVELOPMENT, it is hoped that this newly formed third team will supply and develop local players, a concept which the clubs original chairman Mr Terry Briggs would be proud of. With the Development side now up and running, its only a matter of time before newly discovered 16 – 18 years progress via the reserves and then into the first team.

On conclusion of the 2010 / 2011 season, the third team won the Telford Combination league with a mixture of young and experienced past first team and reserve team players.

Having just avoided possible relegation to division two last year, the 2011/12 season witnessed newly promoted Mark Taylor in the hot seat assisted by former development men Steve Jones and Darryl Sheldon who have been appointed as joint assistant managers following their success last season.

However  Mark Taylor was sacked following the clubs poor run of results on Monday September 14th, and as Steve Jones and Darryl Sheldon both declined to move into the hot seat, fans favorite Jon Gaff was appointed player - manager.
